I worked with Nenad at Providence Hospital in Seattle and we stayed lifelong friends. We studied for the difficult Internal Medicine Boards together (he passed them on the first trial, I had to try again). I knew his sons as little boys and I knew Danica, his first wife. He later visited me at my cabin on Lake Cushman (Olympic Peninsula), I remember his remark that in this setting we should play Wagner loud across the lake. On a later visit to Seattle I had the chance to meet his lovely wife Ellen. I feel guilty that I didnt try harder to talk him out of his adventure, when we corresponded earlier this year. I saw him last at the Chicago Airport last year in spring. He seemed very determined to go through with his plans. He and Ellen had invited me to spend some days in Chicago with them when returning from Europe end of this October. I followed with increasing concern his progress over the Atlantic, using Internet cafes across Poland, Germany and France. I was shocked to find out about his loss. We both had become cardiologists (I practised in Seattle), but our conversations turned more around family and life in general. He was a great friend, always ready to give good and deepfelt advice. I will miss him a lot. Unfortunately I cannot attend the Memorial Service for Nenad. I will be on the Island of St. Lucia to work as volunteer physician for the next 2 months.
